Description

1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 - front

The Ford Mustang was born thanks to Ford Division
General Manager Lee Iacocca, who wanted Ford to
have a more youthful image. Ford already had the right
tools: the compact Falcon platform and a six-cylinder
engine for economy and low cost, as well as a
lightweight V-8 for higher levels of performance.

On April 17, 1964, the Mustang was introduced in both coupe and
convertable body styles built on the Falcon chassis; a 2+2 fastback
followed in short order. But for those who wanted more, there was
car constructor and former racing driver Carroll Shelby. The Texan
had already had incredible successwith Ford's V-8 engines in his
Cobras, and Ford was ready when he offered to modify the
Mustang for greater performance. The result was the 289-powered
Shelby GT-350, which was successful at the track and on
the street. They were also available as rental cars through Hertz.

In 1967, the Mustang was extensively reworked and became a
bigger car with a more aggressive look. Not to be left out, Carroll
Shelby offered 289-cid GT-350 and 428-cid GT-500 versions of the
new Mustang. Although the cars would carry the Shelby name
through the end of the 1970 model year, 1967 was the last year
that they were actually built by Shelby American.

Documented by the Shelby Club, the 1967 GT-500 shown here is
finished in dark blue metalic with white Le Mans stripes and a
black interior. This car has recently completed a full rotisserie
restoration. The 428-cid V-8 is mated to the desirable four-speed
manual transmission. Shelby equipment includes power steering,
power disc brakes, folding rear seat, shoulder harness and factory
roll cage. Options include inboard headlights, original AM radio, and
rare Kelsey Hayes five-spoke wheels with proper Goodyear
speedway f-70 15 white letter tires. Shelby/Ford VIN numbers
have been verified.
